Luke 23:46 “And when Jesus had cried out with a loud voice, He said, “Father, into Your hands I commit My spirit.’” Having said this, He breathed His last." Fulfillment Jesus speaks one last time. After declaring the work of the cross finished He then commits His spirit to the Father. He has endured ridicule, beatings, a crown of thorns, humiliation and the cross out of His great love for us. He has fulfilled prophecy time and time again. Psalm 22:16-18 says: "For dogs have surrounded me; the congregation of the wicked has enclosed Me. They pierced My hands and My feet; I can count all My bones. They look and stare at Me. They divide My garments among them, And for My clothing they cast lots." David wrote the words of Psalm 22. And he wrote these words, "they pierced my hands and my feet" some 500 years or so before crucifixion was even invented as a form of execution by King Darius of the Persians in 519 BC. John 19: 29-30 "Now a vessel full of sour wine was sitting there; and they filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on hyssop, and put it to His mouth. So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit." It is Finished After Jesus made the statement, "I thirst", they then dipped hyssop into sour wine and brought it to His mouth. It is after this act that He declares the work of the cross to be finished. Hyssop was what was used during the Passover to sprinkle the blood of the lamb onto the doorposts of the home. His work as our Passover Lamb, the Lamb of God Who takes away the sins of the world, was completed. Jesus celebrated the Last Supper with His disciples prior to His arrest. That supper was in fact a Passover Seder. The bread He broke was matzah. He said "This is my body." Christmas is a special time of the year, a beautiful season given by God. On this day we must put aside all the past hurts and pain. Let's share this beautiful and Devine day with each and everyone, sharing love, joy, peace, and togetherness. John 19: 28 "After this, Jesus, knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, 'I thirst!'" Living Water The scripture this verse is referring to is Psalm 69:21 "They also gave me gall for my food, And for my thirst they gave me vinegar to drink." The events of the cross are a culmination of a multitude of messianic prophecies. This statement He makes from the cross is no different. But I believe Jesus is saying more than that with these two words. This verse says He knew all things were accomplished. He was done. He had completed the work He had come to the world to complete. John 19: 26-27 "When Jesus therefore saw His mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing by, He said to His mother, “Woman, behold your son!” Then He said to the disciple, “Behold your mother!” And from that hour that disciple took her to his own home." Family Jesus looks down from the cross and sees His mother, Mary standing alongside John, the disciple Jesus loved. He once again chooses to withstand the pain to speak. This time, He essentially instructs John to care for His mother. But He also entrusts John to Mary as well. Here He is demonstrating for us His unwavering love and care for us. He is instructing us as a Church to care for one another. We are family. We are brothers and sisters in Christ. But even more than that, He is also showing us how much He loves us and cares about every single detail of our lives.
